Those of you not from around these parts may not yet have heard about the rather impressive meteor that flew over us and exploded rather brilliantly on Saturday. The flash was seen around Gauteng, and even by some people in the provinces of Mpumalanga and Limpopo.
Of course… I completely missed the entire thing, as I was inside watching some crap movie. Timing is everything… I only heard about it on Sunday from a friend who had been travelling on the N1 highway at the time, who made it pretty clear that is was, for want of a better word, hectic.
“I saw the clouds in the sky brighten up and suddenly this bright ball came through the clouds with a tail of fire behind it. I stopped the car to try and see or hear any noise but nothing. It was amazing. One cannot describe it in words. AWESOME. This night it paid to be up late. I hope the clever people can give us more information” – Pieter Albrecht.
Official comment, yet again from Eyewitness News (article here):
Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor on Monday requested detailed information about the meteor that passed over Gauteng at the weekend.
Hundreds of people saw the fireball late on Saturday night.
It was believed the meteor broke up before hitting the earth.
Scientists and astronomers in the area were still trying to locate its landing site.
“We understand that the meteor passed over Gauteng and some bits might have landed in Limpopo, but we have not been able to get the physical evidence as yet,” said Pandor.
