PlayStation Move officially announced; Sony reveals planned pricing guidelines

After months of speculation Sony Computer Entertainment has come forward and officially announced details behind its motion controller hardware.

The announcement came yesterday during Sony’s Game Developers Conference revealing that the package will be known as the PlayStation Move. Previously it was referred to by the company as the PlayStation Motion Controller.

The Move will be available in a number of packages including a ‘starter kit’ which features the device, the required PlayStation Eye camera and a game. Sony hopes for this package to be available for under $100 (roughly R750).

The device will also be separately bundled with the PlayStation 3 console and will offer 1:1 motion control tracking in supported games.

The company also revealed the PlayStation Move Sub-Controller, which features an analogue interface, will enable the Move to support more conventional titles.

According to Sony this advancement will change the way in which studios develop games.

The PlayStation Move “forces fundamental rethinking around how a game should be designed. The game developer needs to throw away a conventional wisdom of how gamers use a controller and instead consider what will provide the most immersive experience and make players feel a direct connection with the game,” said Sony Computer Entertainment.

Thus far several games which will offer Move support have been announced. The most notable of these is an altered version of the popular PS3 exclusive platformer LittleBigPlanet and a mini game compilation known as ‘Sports Champion’.

Electronic Arts also recently announced that the next Tiger Woods PGA Tour title would feature PlayStation motion control support.

At present exact release and pricing details are not yet available. The PlayStation Move is expected to ship later this year.
